What to do if youre going to miss a deadline
What to do if youre going to miss a deadlineWhat to do if youre going to miss a deadlineFeel that? The fluttering butterfly panicking at the anxiety disco in your rib cage feels like its going to bust right out and go all Hulk Smash on everything. If only you could channel that energy into the deadline youre about to miss. Its as though the doctor said you have a week to live because thats how much time you have until your deadline. That means you have today to decide if you can push through this fueled by an espresso IV drip andno sleep. The reality is youll need to be honest with your client and anfhrer about the likelihood of missing the deadline - cloudy with a chance of serious disapproval.Dont panic at the impending deadline. Youve got this with class and professionalism - and yes, youll keep your job. Heres what you do.1. Extinguish the stress fireSecondhand stress is real and spreads like wildfire - 26% of people experience increased cortisol levels simply by proximity and observation of a stranger expressing stress. Imagine seeing your boss, coworker orloved one undergoing high levels of stress as a witness. For a romantic partner, when you observe this person stressing out, your cortisol levels rise by 40 percent. You need to find the source and prevent it from spreading. Most of the pressure comes from yourself. If your boss and client add their pressure, the pressure feels tripled. Stop self-imposing irrational deadlines and negative self-talk on yourself. Take a break. Go outside. Pour yourself that cup of Joe.Ask yourself hard questions with objectivity, and follow up with self-reminders of your accomplishments. What unrealistic expectations have I placed on myself? What are my fears? What are the fears of my client and boss?To extinguish the stress, youll need to prepare solutions. Dont worry - thats coming up.2. Hack the timelineAsk yourself tough questions about what went wrong to discover what slowed you down in the first place. Also, observ e what went right. Dont let yourself dwell. Youll come back to address your hiccups. Take whats right, and see what you can give the client now. Or, do you need to push the timeline out farther? Do you need to get more people involved in the project? What processes can you cut out to still give the client quality work? Instead of juggling and multitasking, direct single focus to one task at a time - youll give your full attention to every step and eliminate distractions. While hacking the timeline, youll come across many process improvements. Make note of this. Also, know that if you need to outsource work, thats acceptable. Turn the anxiety disco into a party of productivity and quality client work.3. You have to say something soonIts a Captain Obvious moment - you have to say something soon, or those worst-case scenarios playing in your mind may hold merit after all.Accept the situation, and go into action mode. You dont have to think through this alone, but you need to come up w ith possible and actionable solutions.Start with an email, clearly and concisely stating the status. Indicate there were errors in projection without assigning blame, but if you messed up, prepare for concise and honest accountability without overdoing it. Right now, the focus is gathering everyone together at the office. You already faced your worst case scenario, and now you move on to solutions. Bring your hacked timeline to the meeting. This shows that you addressed what went wrong on your end and took measures to address and fix the solution. You show doing an excellent job matters to you. Getting everyone together stresses the importance of team effort and workplace support. Work together.Everyone misses a deadline at some point. The important part is learning from the experience and trusting your gut when you know the projections are off.You may struggle with figuring out what went wrong. In the meantime, what matters is that you stepped up to address the situation with accou ntability, promptness and solutions. While the project may not meet the original deadline, youll rebound with quality work because you took the time to do it the right way - with your job, reputation and passion for the work in check.

Job seekers should have a profile on LinkedIn for networking. Those are the bare necessities. But there are some morainteresting tips and social media tricks to make your job search social media efforts truly worthwhile. And thats what were covering here today. If, like many job seekers, youve cleaned up your Facebook account, created a basic LinkedIn profile, and maybe dabbled a little in tweeting, its enticing to take the passive approach. Sit back and wait to see what happens. But this approach almost guarantees that nothing will happen, and the lack of results makes people swear that job searching with social media just doesnt work for them.Heres where our tips come in. The following fivejob search social media tricks will take your efforts from passive to active. And youll actually start to see results- engaging more with recruiters and employers, finding more job leaders, and keeping in better contact with your professional network.5Job Search Social Media Tricks You Need to Know1. Start engaging with people and companies.Terri Rutter writes on Northeastern Universitys alumni blog that its not enough to quietly read social media deutsche post dhls from the people and companies you admire. If you want to work for them, youve got to interact with them, tooSocial media is the new cocktail party- everyone is there, and anyone can talk to almost anyone, Rutter writes. Follow or like organizations and individuals youre interested in, and engage with their posts like what they post, respond and ask thoughtful questions, share and repost.Ive been doing this more in my own professional social media pursuits, specifically on Twitter, and Im amazed at whos responded to my tweets. So put yourself out there- tweet a smart message to a recruiter at one of your top company choices, or congratulate a company on a new achievement. Ask a thoughtful question of a companys manager, and see what happens. And yes, if you tweet at me, I will respond2. Showcase work projects and accomplishments with LinkedIn bling.LinkedIn has a lot of newer, flashier features for your profile. Hannah Morgan at Career Sherpa calls these options bling because they make your LinkedIn profile richer.Morgan writes, Your LinkedIn profile can support embedded files and media. This means that you can upload PowerPoint, Excel, and absolut files under a job in your Experience section. And with documents like that, your experience section gets a whole lot more interactive and visual. Its more likely to leave an impression in an employers mind.Heres what to look for if you want to add media to your LinkedIn profileMorgan suggests, One idea is to show samples of your work to prove you have the necessary skills for future jobs. Better yet, add video or pictures to your summary to highlight your career successes.3. Ask for and offer recommendations.Another great feature LinkedIn offers is the recommendations section of your profile. People youve worked with (peers and superiors) can leave quick blurbs that sing your praises, and you can do the same for them.If youre currently working, you might suggest a recommendation swap with your coworkers, where you each write positive recommendations for each other. Choose your recommenders wisely, so that youre sure they will write positive things about you. But more so because you need to be able to write something positive about themAnother way to ask for recommendations is to write a recommendation for someone on LinkedIn first. Choose someone youre connected to andworked with closely enough to merit a recommendation. When viewing their profile, scroll down to the recommendation section where a button asks you, Would you like to recommend this person? When they receive notice of your recommendation, theyll be asked if theyd like to return the favor, and hopefully your kind words have encouraged them to do just that4. Use information from social media to show companies youre paying attention.Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn are particularly well-suited to help you keep up with industry and company happenings. At the very least, follow all of the companies to which youve applied for jobs. This way, youll see messages and receive notifications when they post something new.Whenever you see a bit of news or information to celebrate with that company, use it as an excuse to reach back out to them. Email the hiring manager or recruiting contact to let them know youre still interested in the position and that you saw the company received an award, launched a new product, or did something else newsworthy. This shows that youre paying attention, and that your applicationis worth a second look.5. Find recruiters names and contact info through social media. One of the most common job search tips is Always try to find a real person to contact when submitting an application, rather than just sending it to whom it may concern and into an online applicant tracking system. But it can be really difficult to find the right persons contact information. Try these steps for using social media to do just thatOn LinkedIn, use the search box to search for recruiter, human resources manager, and similar job titles, along with the companys name. The results will show you anyone who holds that title and works for the company. Then, on LinkedIn, find out which of your connections works for the company, or knows the people you found from your initial search, and ask them for the name and email address of the hiring manager or to introduce you.On Twitter, look for recruiters of those companies, many of whom are now using Twitter to advertise their open jobs and source for applicants. On Google, the Muse recommends doing a variety of searches to find the right email ad dress. Lets use Joe Schmo who works at Starbucks as an example. Try Googling Joe Schmo email and Joe Schmo Starbucks.com, suggests Alexis Grant. If you want to move from passive to active job seeker, try incorporating some or all of these job search social media tricks into your efforts.Start Your Job SearchReaders, what job search social media tricks do you use with success? 6 Best Questions to Ask in a Job Interview as a Career Changer
6 Best Questions to Ask in a Job Interview as a Career Changer6 Best Questions to Ask in a Job Interview as a Career Changer86 Best Questions to Ask in a Job InterviewWhen youre asked if you have any questions, the worst thing to do is say no, according to the USA Today story 5 Phrases You Should Never Say in a Job Interview. While you shouldnt just ask any old question, like, Do I need a card key to use the restroom? or Wheres a good place to grab lunch around here? you do need to ask a question that relates to the job.If youre not sure what to ask, here are six of the best questions to ask in a job interview, no matter what industry youre looking to work in.Why is this job available?Maybe its a new position. Or maybe the previous person went on maternity leave- and never came back. As a job seeker, its a smart move to find out why the position is available, says Nicole Peery, a data entry specialist at. (In fact, these are the questions that she asked during her interview with our company) Depending on the answer, it can help you determine if you might want the position (i.e., the company is growing and needs someone with your skill set) or not (i.e., the previous employee had a nervous work-related breakdown). Is there anything that is not on the job posting that you would want someone to know about this position? Its almost impossible for a vermgen employer to list every single solitary job duty on the job description. Asking about other responsibilities can give you an overall view of what the job will entail. How can someone in this position go the extra mile? This is the type of question that a potential employer would love to hear Not only does it show a vested interest in the position, but it also shows an employees initiative to go above and beyond the call of duty (or in this case, the job description) to produce amazing work results. Its six months from today and youve hired someone for this position. What will they have done to make you think you made t he right choice?Similar to the above question, what youre essentially asking is, beyond the basic training period and learning curve that comes with having a new job, how can a potential employee shine in this job. It shows that you want to please a potential boss, too.How would you characterize your management style? What kind of person is successful under this style? When you ask this type of question, youre imagining what it would be like to work for a boss like this person. Is the person a micromanager, or more relaxed when dealing with his staff? Beyond deadlines and project management, youre trying to establish how this persons managerial style and your work style will mesh together. What challenges will someone in this position face?If the job youre applying for has been held by previous employees, then your boss-to-be will certainly know if they had any issues or came across problems as they related to the position. This question helps you assess former workers issues so that you can a) understand any potential pitfalls faced by those who had the job before you and b) figure out a way ahead of time to solve those issues. When you think of it, a job interview is really a conversation, says Peery, who also writes the blog, UglyGreenCouch. The job seeker should use the time as an opportunity to interview the interviewer. Its a two-way street So make sure that you have a question (or two) ready for your interviewer, and hell quickly see that youre not only serious about the job, but the ideal candidate for the positionLooking to change careers?
